K9 Unit

The Pleasantville Police Department currently employs two specialized canines that are assigned to their respective handlers within the Patrol Division. Our department actively has a Belgian Tervuren, and a Labrador Retriever. In order to be certified within the State of New Jersey both the canines and their handlers must undergo vigorous training. Their initial training includes a six-month basic training academy followed by a specialized academy for either a narcotics or bomb certification. After completion of all their initial training, the canine unit must attend a monthly in-service training in order to keep their high degree of effectiveness.

The Pleasantville Police Department K9 Unit is an invaluable asset to the City of Pleasantville. The canine and its handler truly become a team as the handler takes their canine partner with them home each day. The unit has been responsible for the recovery of countless firearms and narcotics off the street since the unit’s inception, making our streets safer. In addition, the unit has also located individuals that were in need of assistance, but were difficult to locate.
